The human body consists of 206 bones which are comprised of bone cells made up of various calcium compounds. Like skin, bones are constantly regenerating, absorbing calcium content nightly. When the bones become calcium deficient, osteoporosis may occur. Osteoporosis is the thinning and weakening of the bones, and usually happens later in life. Unfortunately, 44 million US men and women over the age of 50 suffer from this debilitating illness. Post-menopausal women are particularly plagued with this disease. Also important to note, is that bone health has A LOT to do with diet.
Most importantly, bone health is established in childhood and this is the perfect time to start addressing bone health. Bones strengthen and become resilient at a young age and this trend continues to develop over time only if a person leads an active lifestyle. If a person leads an inactive lifestyle, especially starting at a young age, the bones will weaken and develop bone disease.
To avoid bone disease, a person should get plenty of calcium and potassium either in their diet or through supplementation, avoid excess sodium and salt in diet, and practice daily physical activity which should occasionally include weight-bearing exercises. The more weight a person puts on their bones, the stronger they will get. Also, kefir, a fermented milk drink, is seen to be especially beneficial for bone density loss.
